At VOX Mental Health, we are committed to creating spaces where parents can have honest conversations about mental health, self-compassion, and the realities of caregiving. We were honoured to partner with Bloom Mother's Morning to offer a free workshop titled, "Why the Pressure to 'Soak It All In' Sets Mothers up for Failure."
The workshop brought together mothers from across the community to explore one of the most common (and often unspoken) challenges of parenthood: the overwhelming pressure to enjoy every moment, appreciate every stage, and somehow remain grateful through every difficult experience.
While well-intentioned, messages such as "You'll miss this one day" or "Soak it all in" can leave many mothers feeling guilty, inadequate, or ashamed when parenting feels exhausting, stressful, or overwhelming.
Modern mothers are often faced with unrealistic expectations. They are expected to be present, patient, productive, emotionally available, organized, and grateful, all while navigating sleep deprivation, career demands, household responsibilities, and the emotional labour of raising children.
During the workshop, we discussed how societal expectations and social media messaging can contribute to feelings of pressure and self-criticism. Many mothers report feeling as though they are failing if they are not enjoying every stage of parenting, even when they are doing their absolute best.
One of the key messages of the session was simple but powerful:
You can love your children deeply and still find parenting difficult.
These experiences are not mutually exclusive. Parenting can be joyful and exhausting, meaningful and frustrating, rewarding and overwhelming—all at the same time.
A major focus of the workshop was helping mothers move away from perfectionism and toward self-compassion.
Participants explored:
Rather than striving to enjoy every moment, mothers were encouraged to recognize that parenting is a complex journey filled with a wide range of emotions.
Giving ourselves permission to feel frustrated, tired, overwhelmed, or uncertain does not make us bad parents, .it makes us human.
At VOX Mental Health, we believe that supporting parents is an essential part of supporting families and communities. Maternal mental health deserves open conversations, accessible resources, and compassionate support.
We are grateful to Bloom Mother's Morning for partnering with us to host this important discussion and to the mothers who attended and shared their experiences so openly.
Our hope is that every participant left with a greater sense of self-compassion, validation, and permission to let go of impossible expectations.
Because the goal of motherhood isn't to soak in every moment perfectly.
The goal is to move through each season with support, flexibility, self-compassion, and the knowledge that you are doing enough.
