In 2025, VOX Mental Health was honoured to provide free on-site grief counselling services at a local Barrie school, supporting both students and staff as they navigated a period of loss within their community. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to accessible, responsive mental health care in times of acute need.
Grief in a school setting can have a profound impact on emotional safety, learning, and day-to-day functioning. When a loss affects a school community, students and educators may experience a wide range of responses, including sadness, confusion, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, or emotional overwhelm. Providing immediate, compassionate support helps stabilize the environment and ensures that individuals are not processing grief in isolation.
The on-site counselling support focused on creating a safe, supportive space where students could express emotions, ask questions, and begin to process their experience in a developmentally appropriate way.
Support included:
The goal was not to “fix” grief, but to provide containment, validation, and tools that help students move through the experience with support and understanding.
Educators often play a critical role in supporting grieving students while simultaneously managing their own emotional responses. As part of the on-site response, VOX Mental Health also provided support for teachers and staff, including:
This dual focus helped ensure that both students and staff had access to appropriate support during a challenging time.
Providing immediate grief counselling within the school setting helps reduce isolation and supports healthier emotional processing. Early intervention can also reduce the risk of complicated grief responses and help students maintain a sense of stability during a difficult time.
Having mental health support directly on-site ensures that care is accessible, timely, and integrated into the environment where students spend much of their day.
At VOX Mental Health, we are committed to supporting schools not only through planned workshops and training, but also through responsive, on-the-ground clinical support when communities experience loss or crisis.
We are honoured to have been able to stand alongside students, staff, and families during this time and to contribute to a supportive, compassionate school environment.
Together, we continue to support community well-being by ensuring that no one has to navigate grief alone.
