That is why we are honoured to support Heart With Wings and the Henry & Friends Memorial Fund as a 2026 Circle of Compassion Sponsor.
For many people, the relationship they share with an animal is not peripheral to their family. Pets can be companions through major life transitions, sources of comfort during difficult periods, and deeply significant attachment figures. When a beloved pet becomes seriously ill or reaches the end of their life, the emotional impact can be profound.
And when financial circumstances complicate decisions about that care, an already painful experience can become even more difficult.
The Henry & Friends Memorial Fund grew from the story of Henry, a Labrador-Border Collie mix who received palliative care through Heart With Wings in 2019. After Henry died peacefully at home, his owner participated in a grief group and expressed a wish that other families could have access to the same kind of compassionate in-home care their family had experienced. From that conversation came the idea for an angel fund named in Henry's memory.
Today, the fund helps eligible families with cats or dogs who need palliative or end-of-life care but who may not otherwise be able to fully afford that care. Families are expected to contribute toward treatment costs and explore other available sources of funding, with Henry & Friends helping to bridge eligible gaps when funds are available.
It is a beautiful example of one family's grief being transformed into something that continues to help other families.
As mental health professionals, we also recognize something important about the work Henry & Friends is doing: pet loss is real loss. The death of an animal can represent the loss of a companion, a routine, a source of comfort, and a relationship that may have been present through years of a person's life.
Yet pet grief can sometimes be minimized. Someone may hear, "It was only a pet."
They may feel pressure to return to normal quickly or believe that the intensity of their grief needs to be justified to others. But grief does not organize itself according to how other people rank our relationships. We grieve attachment, connection, memories, routines, and the absence of someone who mattered to us.
Supporting families through the end of an animal's life therefore involves more than veterinary medicine. It also means recognizing the people who love that animal and the emotional experience they are moving through. That is part of what makes the philosophy behind Henry & Friends particularly meaningful to us.
Because Grief Deserves Space
At VOX, much of our work involves making room for experiences that can be difficult to explain to other people. Grief is one of them.
Whether someone is grieving a person, an animal, a relationship, an identity, a future they expected to have, or another meaningful loss, we believe their experience deserves to be taken seriously. We are proud to see an organization within our Barrie community similarly recognizing the significance of the human-animal bond and helping families access compassionate care when their pets need it most.
