Global Tensions Are Taking a Toll on Canadians’ Mental Health

Navigating Anxiety in Uncertain Times: Coping with Global Events

As global tensions rise, many people are finding themselves struggling with increased anxiety and stress. At VOX Mental Health, we are seeing a growing number of individuals who have never previously experienced anxiety now grappling with overwhelming feelings of fear, uncertainty, and distress. The shifting political landscape, economic instability, and international conflicts can all contribute to a sense of unease, especially when they feel close to home.

For Canadians, the current geopolitical climate presents unique challenges. The longstanding sense of security in our relationship with our neighbours is being tested in new ways. With tariffs coming into effect, economic concerns escalating, and unsettling rhetoric about Canada’s sovereignty emerging, it is natural to feel a heightened sense of vulnerability. When the world feels unpredictable, our nervous system reacts accordingly—activating stress responses that can manifest as anxiety, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, or even physical symptoms like headaches and fatigue.

Understanding the Impact of Global Anxiety

World events can profoundly impact our mental health, even if we are not directly involved. War, political instability, discrimination, and economic uncertainty can evoke deep emotional responses, particularly for those who have experienced past trauma or have personal ties to affected regions. Additionally, the constant exposure to distressing news through social media and 24/7 news cycles can amplify feelings of helplessness and despair.

It’s important to acknowledge that these feelings are valid. You are not alone in your concerns, and there are ways to manage this anxiety while still remaining informed and engaged.

Strategies to Cope with Anxiety About World Events

  1. Balance Your Media Consumption
    • Stay informed, but set boundaries on your news intake.
    • Limit scrolling sessions and mute notifications if needed.
    • Choose reputable sources and avoid sensationalized media.
    • Take intentional breaks from consuming distressing content.
  2. Focus on What You Can Control
    • While you may not be able to change global events, you can control how you respond.
    • Establish daily routines to create a sense of stability.
    • Prioritize self-care, including sleep, exercise, and nutrition.
    • Engage in mindfulness practices such as deep breathing or meditation.
  3. Stay Connected and Engaged
    • Reach out to friends, family, or support groups to process your emotions.
    • Participate in meaningful community initiatives or volunteer work.
    • If activism feels empowering, consider peaceful ways to get involved, such as writing to representatives or attending events that align with your values.
  4. Validate and Manage Your Feelings
    • Recognize that anxiety in response to world events is a natural reaction.
    • Practice self-compassion—there is no “right” way to feel in times of uncertainty.
    • Seek professional support if your anxiety feels overwhelming or persistent.

Moving Forward Together

These are challenging times, and it is completely understandable to feel anxious, frustrated, or even helpless. However, by taking proactive steps to care for your mental health, setting boundaries with distressing content, and finding ways to stay connected and engaged, you can regain a sense of control and resilience.

At VOX Mental Health, we are here to support you. If you are struggling with anxiety related to global events, we encourage you to reach out. You are not alone, and together, we can navigate these uncertain times with care and compassion.
