Motherhood has always been a communal journey. In hunter-gatherer societies, women didn’t raise children alone. They gathered in groups, foraged together, shared childcare, and supported one another. Raising children was a collective effort, a village that provided practical help, emotional support, and safety.
Today, many mothers are expected to be both the ‘hunter’ and the ‘gatherer,’ juggling work, childcare, household responsibilities, and emotional labour; all often in isolation. The natural village that once surrounded mothers has largely disappeared. Support is fragmented, time is scarce, and the connections that once came freely now often come with a price, whether financial or emotional.
Modern motherhood can feel lonely and overwhelming. Without a supportive community, stress and burnout increase. Many mothers experience guilt, self-doubt, and pressure to “do it all,” while lacking the emotional safety nets that previous generations benefited from.
Research underscores just how critical these connections are. A recent Harvard study on longevity and wellbeing found that strong relationships are the number one predictor of health, happiness, and lifespan. Connection isn’t a luxury, it’s a fundamental human need. Yet, many mothers navigate parenthood without this protective network, raising children in relative isolation.
While we cannot fully return to the communal structures of hunter-gatherer societies, we can create modern villages. Building supportive networks (through parenting groups, trusted friends, or local communities) helps mothers feel seen, supported, and capable. It’s about fostering meaningful connections that reduce isolation, share the emotional load, and offer practical help when it’s needed most.
At VOX Mental Health, we see the pressures mothers face. We know the invisible labour, the emotional juggling, and the weight of doing it all alone. Our approach supports parents to:
• Connect with others for emotional and practical support
• Validate and process feelings of overwhelm or isolation
• Explore strategies to build sustainable support networks
To every parent feeling the weight of motherhood: you are seen. You are valued. You are doing important work, and it’s okay to ask for support. By reclaiming the village, even in a modern form, you create not only a safer, healthier environment for yourself but also a more nurturing one for your children.
