What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy? And Why It Might Be the Approach You've Been Looking For

At VOX Mental Health, many of our therapists are trained in an approach called Internal Family Systems (IFS). If you’ve never heard of IFS before, you’re not alone. But for many people, it becomes a powerful and compassionate way to heal from trauma, reduce inner conflict, and develop greater self-understanding.

What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

IFS is a therapeutic approach that views the mind as made up of different "parts." Rather than seeing ourselves as having just one unified identity, IFS helps us get to know the different parts of us that carry unique feelings, beliefs, and roles. Think of them like an inner cast of characters.

For example, you might have:

  • A part that feels anxious and overwhelmed
  • A part that is critical and harsh
  • A part that wants to please everyone
  • A part that feels stuck in sadness or fear

IFS also introduces the idea of the Self: a calm, grounded, compassionate core that exists within each of us. Healing happens when we learn to lead our internal system from that Self, rather than from our wounded or protective parts.

How Does IFS Work?

In an IFS session, your therapist helps you build a relationship with your parts. You might start by noticing an inner voice that sounds judgmental or anxious, and then gently get curious about it.

Rather than trying to eliminate parts (like anxiety or perfectionism), IFS helps you understand their function. Often, these parts developed in response to past experiences. They may be trying to protect you, even if their strategies no longer serve you well today.

Through this process, clients often find:

  • Greater self-compassion
  • Relief from inner conflict
  • Reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • A deeper sense of clarity and emotional balance

Why Clients Love IFS

Many people find IFS to be a refreshing alternative to approaches that focus solely on thoughts or behaviours. It honours emotional complexity, doesn’t pathologize internal struggles, and creates space for genuine self-connection.

IFS is especially effective for:

  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Perfectionism and people-pleasing
  • Religious trauma and faith deconstruction
  • Low self-worth and internalized shame

IFS in Action at VOX Mental Health

Our therapists often blend IFS with other evidence-based approaches, such as CBT, narrative therapy, and somatic work. We use it to support clients navigating everything from stress and burnout to childhood wounds and spiritual abuse.

Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or simply curious about understanding yourself better, IFS can help you slow down and listen inward with care.
